ROBERT E. “RED” SMITH CYNTHIANA, INDIANA Robert Eugene “Red” Smith, 91, passed away on Wednesday, January 2, 2019 at the Linda E. White Hospice House at Deaconess Hospital in Evansville, Indiana. Red was born in Cynthiana, Indiana on June 7, 1927 to William David and Grace Viola (Williams) Smith. He married Mary Patricia “Pat” Hepler on December 26, 1954. Red graduated from Cynthiana High School in 1945 and was a U.S. Army Veteran serving as a basic training Sergeant at Camp Lee, Virginia. Red worked in the construction, railroad, pipeline, and oil production industries before becoming one of original staff members of the newly formed North Posey High School in 1959. He retired from North Posey in 1991 after 32 years as Maintenance Supervisor. In 1956, he became one of the founding members of the Smith Township Volunteer Fire Department in Cynthiana, Indiana and served the Department and community for 36 years. He was a Gold Card life member of the Indiana Volunteer Firefighter’s Association and a member of the American Legion Post #278 of Poseyville, Indiana. In October of 2016, he was one of eighty-five veterans participating in the Washington DC Honor Flight. Red is survived by his wife “Pat” of sixty-four years; 2 sons: John (Kathy) Smith of Huntingburg, Indiana and Joe (Theresa) Smith of Cynthiana, Indiana; a daughter: Mary (Jim) Swanson of Henderson Kentucky, 6 grandchildren and 4 great grandchildren. Preceding him in death were his parents; brothers: Wilfred, Wayne, William (II) and James; sisters: Dorthea, Mary and Norma and one half-sister: Ruth. Red’s family invites all friends and relatives to an Open House to celebrate his life and share stories and memories of a man who was known by so many. The Open House celebration will be held 1-4 p.m. central time, Saturday, January 12, 2019, at the Poseyville Community Center in Poseyville, Indiana. Internment of the cremains will be at Calvert’s Chapel Cemetery near Cynthiana, Indiana. The Indiana Volunteer Firefighter’s Association and the American Legion Post #278 will conduct burial rites, 2 p.m. central time, Sunday, January 13, 2019 at the Poseyville Community Center.
